Dell - no more love for you.

Date June 15, 2007

I used to be a big Dell fan. We had Dell computers at work (we still do), and never had any trouble with them. They were quite reliable.

But lately, I haven’t been “feeling” them.

I have a Dell desktop at home, Dell laptops, a Dell PDA, a couple of Dell LCD TVs and even used to own Dell stocks (sold them a few years ago). The desktop and laptos are doing well, but the PDA is a goner and two of the TVs are in the shop. They’re having a hard time repairing it, because Dell doesn’t manufacture these TVs (just rebrand them), so they don’t have the parts and can’t tell us where to get these parts (some obscure factory in China).

Today, there was a post on the Consumerist regarding an email chain between Dell and the Consumerist’s legal depto. There was a recent post in the Consumerist (22 Confessions of a Former Dell Sales Manager) that Tracy from Dell was trying to remove, and Gaby from the Consumerist stood up for us consumers.

If you haven’t checked them out yet, you should do it right away. The Consumerist is a site dedicated to Consumer Protection. There are tips, horror stories about services and companies and their forum is quite helpful too.

Knowing your rights, the scams out there, the best and worst service providers and also some shopping tips can save you a lot of money, and you can find it all on their site.

As for Dell… Sorry buddy, but until you step up your game and show you care about us, consumers, I’m going to have to look at other options.

Interesting note: Consumerist is a property of Gawker Media, which owns several other properties, including Gizmodo, which is a technical web magazine with Dell being one of its advertisers.
